Filming short film-18th gone wrong

I have recently just finished my first high tech film which I wrote myself. The film is about a boy named stevie (Stephen) who is having an 18th birthday party. His girlfriend is the main character and the film shows how the hate that stevie's sister has for the girlfriend can end the party in a destaster.

I was paired with my class mate Eamon O'Neill and was giving a small crew. At first the crew worried me because there were certain people who I knew didn't seem as reliable as others and so I asked another member of the class who I could trust to come and help which he was more than happy to do. However on the day of filming the crew members did show which was brilliant as it meant I had more people to help out.

One of the problems we came across was the location as I wanted to have the main location in a pub. Eamon eventually wa able to get a pub in the falls road which was a handy location for everyone and we were able to have it all day which was surprising considering it was the day before st paddys day. This however did not work out as just 2 days before filming a member of the pub died and because we didn't pay for the location the family got put first and got the space we had booked. This obviously created caos as we didn't want to reschule everything due to the amount of actors and extras we needed. So thankful Eamon was able to get his mummy to get us a hall above her work. It wasn't the place I was hoping for but with it beig last mintue I was more than happy to take it. It actually turned out well after we fixed it up and added in party stuff (banners, party poppers, childhood photos etc) However one thing I realise was going to be a probably was the shot list we had created around the previous location as because it was different space it meant things ha to be changed which was confusing at first but we got there in the end. We were thankful still able to use the previous pub for scenes like the argument between te sister an girlfriend in the toilet and the existing of the pub because it meant we were still able to give that pub look without having he vitally hall.

Another problem we faced was actors which was my main part of organising as I knew actors from my youth group. At first it wasn't hard to get people and everything was sorted quickly but then a week before filming my main actress had to pull out and because it was too short notice it meant I had I do it as I have an acting background and was the only one who could do it. We also had trouble finding someone who could play the sister, Rebbecca, and so we didn't to put it up online (twitter, Facebook) and eventually we got a reply from a girl who sents us a video of her acting out some of the lines and from this I knew she was perfect for the role.  Extras were also a problem as most people were going awayfor the st paddys day weekend or where working as the group would have been teenager who had part time jobs which meant they worked on weekends. But we finally got people the day before filming and thanks to the hall being a small place it made it look like there was more people than there was.

So it came to the day of filming and myself, Eamon and the crew got there early to set up and run through some things and when it came I filming everything went great the actors where on time and focused, the crew were on the ball an well prepared and helpful whenever we got stuck.

So overall my experience for my first short film was mad and stressful but with the end result it was with it and I love every minute of it.

BBC

On Monday 19th November our class got the chance to go to the BBC studios where we had the chance to learn a bit more about the pre and pot production of television. It also gave us a good insight of what type of environment we hope to work in after our course.

Personally I thought it was a brilliant experience as it makes me look forward to the possible outcomes of my future that I hope to have. One thing though that made the day even better was the fact I got the chance to meet and silence the well known radio presenter Hugh Duncan ( he was unable to answer one of my questions, "if you could interview anyone who would it be"... which i thought was an easy enough question)

Interest......

While doing this course I have realised that the area i feel suits me to best would be the director role. I believe this suits me best as i am the type of person that has to put forward my ideas even if they don't go anywhere or get worked on I still need them to be heard. I also enjoy actually seen my ideas come to live and learn new ways on how to develop them and find it interesting in hearing other people's thoughts on them.
Also while being a director you get an adrenalin rush which makes me enjoy it all the more as it gives you sense of achievement and a buzz as you see your idea come to life.

While working in the studio I've had the chance to watch other people take the role of the floor manager and from what I've seen I believe that the floor manager would be simular to a director as their in charge of everything that happens on the floor and give out orders from the director. So this would be a role I'd like to take on to see if my theory is correct.

Career path

While studying this course I have had the chance to experience what it would be like in a number of role such as director, camera, editing and the basics on sound and lighting. Out of the five the one that I though suited my interest the most was the director as even though it required a lot of creative thinking and thinking on be spot, I enjoyed the fact I had the most say in the project as I enjoy putting my ideas forward and seeing how they turn out.

One role I'd like to try out though would be the floor manager as it allows you to be closer to the action and still have a certain amount of control. I'd also like to work more on lighting as I found it interesting to work on.

FRESH programme week

From the 22nd October to 26th October I attend a learning programme in Springfield Belfast metropolitan college where I was told I would develop my creative skills and learn a new way of learning.

This was definitely not the case........

Considering I have now left school, which I attended for 14 years, and I'm now at a HND level I would like to think that I am capable and have found a way in which I enjoy and am comfortable to learn in. So first con of this programme was trying to teach student from ages 18 and over how to learn.........FAIL!

In the programme you were put into group of four, one person from each subject, and every table was given a brief of either a company or in my case a uniform in which we had to create. Each brief was informed by the person who runned the busniess or school, but not all of those people showed up showing how much they actually cared about the programme. During the week the was constant rotation around your zone which is when everyone worked on each others brief which was pointless as it took the new people about 10 minutes to get a basic knowledge of the brief and another 10 minutes reading the previous notes then by the time it came to putting notes on yourself it was time to rotate again. I also found it annoy the way once you had actually added the points you could think of your zone leader came round and asked for another 10 more which ended up a total mess as people ended up putting stuff that had nothing to do with the brief.

The programme, to me, was almost as if I was back in primary school. I wasn't allowed to leave my table and interact with others ( which they informed was one of the key points of attending the programme, meeting new people from different subjects), I was putting sticky notes on a whiteboard which actually lead to people drawing funny pictures and making stuff which had nothing to do with the task you were assigned to. I actually saw one boy who had made a mermaid out of clay :-/. The "zone leader" who was assigned to each zone were no help either infact they were annoying. By having someone come over to you every 5 minutes and stand over your shoulder made me feel an even bigger kid and half the time they didn't even have a clue what they were on about themselves!

Another con of the programme was that it had absolute nothing to do with my subject. From this I was definitely not pleased as I don't like the thought of paying so much money to study a certain topic and having to waste a week creating a basic school uniform was could have been done in a few hours and it more than likely didn't even get made therefore pointless. :-/

There was also the matter of getting to the college every morning on time as the location was out of the way and I was only able to get one bus which came every 45minutes and if I missed that then I would have had to get a black taxi to falls road and walk the rest  which would have took an extra 15-20 minutes.

One of the things that made my blood boil and almost made me rip my hair out was the constant, POINTLESS announcements because even though the man said at the start of the day "don't worry this will be my only announcement of the day and then you can all work on your briefs....."IT WASN'T! Not by a long shot. And the announcement weren't helpful at all, basically because his animal sounds and crap impressions that were used for countdowns were not only bad but were not needed at all, a simple "right guys time to move to the next brief" would have done. Actually the only useful announcement was when he told me when I was getting a break :-p

The only pro I could say I got from this was that I had to chance to meet a few new and interesting people that were placed in my group and I was able to have a quick look at the new film studio which I hope I get to use next year but other than that the whole thing was a BIG disappointment!
